In a landmark decision, the Modi government has announced the rollout of a nationwide caste census that will include people of all religions — including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and others. The move marks a significant step in gathering detailed socio-economic data across communities.
The caste census aims to create a more inclusive database to help shape policies and welfare schemes more effectively. This is the first time that caste information will be officially collected for all religious groups in India.
In another major reform, the government has also decided to link electoral rolls with birth and death records. Officials say this step will help remove fake or duplicate entries from voter lists, ensuring cleaner and more accurate elections.
“This is a historic step towards transparency and better governance,” said a senior government official, adding that these measures will strengthen democracy and improve delivery of benefits to the right people.
The dual move is being seen as a bold attempt to modernize data systems while addressing long-standing demands for caste-based representation and electoral integrity.
