COVID-19 Surge in India: Active Cases Rise to 3,758, Two Deaths Reported in Kerala and Karnataka

COVID-19

India is witnessing a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases, with active infections reaching 3,758 as of Sunday, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The recent spike, driven by emerging sub-variants, has led to renewed concern, although most cases remain clinically mild.

Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, with over 1,400 people currently infected. In the last 24 hours, two COVID-related deaths were reported — a 24-year-old woman in Kerala and a 63-year-old man in Karnataka. Both had serious underlying health conditions including sepsis, tuberculosis, and cancer, according to health officials.

Apart from Kerala, several other states have seen a steady increase in case numbers. Maharashtra currently has 485 active cases, Delhi 436, Gujarat 320, Karnataka 238, West Bengal 287, Tamil Nadu 199, and Uttar Pradesh 149.

Experts attribute the surge to new sub-variants like NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, which are believed to be more transmissible but generally less severe. Authorities have emphasized that the current wave does not warrant panic, but they are urging citizens to remain vigilant, especially those with comorbidities or compromised immunity.

While no new nationwide restrictions have been announced, the health ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and advises standard preventive measures — masking in crowded places, frequent hand hygiene, and staying home if symptomatic.
