Elon Musk Bans Hashtags in Ads on X, Calls Them an ‘Aesthetic Nightmare’

Elon Musk has announced that starting tomorrow, hashtags will be banned from all advertisements on X (formerly Twitter). The move comes as part of his effort to streamline the platform’s visual design and redefine how paid content appears to users.

In a post made directly on X, Musk stated, “Starting tomorrow, the aesthetic nightmare that is hashtags will be banned from ads on X.” The announcement has sparked wide discussion, with users and advertisers expressing mixed reactions.

Some social media users welcomed the decision, calling hashtags in ads outdated and visually disruptive. Others, especially digital marketers, criticized the sudden policy shift, pointing out that hashtags have long been a useful tool for increasing reach and campaign tracking.

Advertisers were reportedly caught off guard, with many scrambling to revise ongoing promotional content. With no prior warning, several brand campaigns may now face disruptions or reduced engagement.

Despite the criticism, Musk remains firm on the change, emphasizing his desire to improve the quality and appearance of ad content on the platform. Known for his bold and often unorthodox decisions, Musk ended his post with the phrase: “Make ads beautiful again.”

As of now, the ban applies only to advertisements. It is unclear whether similar changes could be introduced for regular user posts in the future. The new rule takes effect on June 27, 2025.
