In the face of dwindling water levels and ominous signs of drought, Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana, is gearing up to confront a potentially severe water crisis this summer. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has sounded the alarm, acknowledging the critical situation during the launch of the Rythu Nestham program on Wednesday.
Addressing the public, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasized the impact of deficit rainfall, leading to a significant decrease in water levels across all reservoirs in the state. Urging farmers to comprehend the severity of the situation, he called for cooperation with the government to collectively face and overcome the impending challenges.
To address the pressing issue, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has instructed officials to procure water from the Yellampalli Project and ensure water tankers are ready for deployment in Hyderabad city. The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is actively engaged in pumping water from various sources, including the crucial Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir.
Officials estimate that an additional 50 million gallons per day (MGD) of water supply will be required in Hyderabad, supplementing the existing 550 MGD allocated for drinking water purposes. The city relies on water sources such as Krishna, Godavari, Manjeera, and the twin reservoirs Osmansagar & Himayatsagar.
The situation echoes concerns reminiscent of past water crises, notably in Chennai. Hyderabad’s predicament underscores the vital need for water conservation measures. The HMWSSB’s continuous efforts to pump water from multiple sources highlight the severity of the situation and the urgency of addressing the water scarcity issue.
Residents are urged to cooperate with the government’s initiatives and adopt water-saving practices. The call to “SAVE WATER THIS SUMMER TO FIGHT DROUGHT—START USING LESS TODAY!” resonates not only in Hyderabad but also in other regions grappling with similar challenges, such as Bengaluru, where depleting groundwater levels and drought in the Cauvery basin are raising concerns.
As Hyderabad braces for a challenging summer ahead, proactive conservation measures and collective efforts are deemed crucial to mitigate the impact of the impending water crisis.
