EU Set to Ban Russian Gas Imports Starting 2026

In a significant move to reduce energy dependence on Moscow, the European Commission has proposed a formal ban on Russian natural gas imports—both pipeline and liquefied natural gas (LNG)—starting January 1, 2026. This marks a major step toward phasing out all Russian fossil fuel imports within the next few years.

The proposal, if passed by EU member states, would prohibit the signing of new contracts for Russian gas beyond mid-2025. Existing short-term contracts will be allowed to continue only until mid-2026. However, any long-term agreements will be terminated no later than January 1, 2028, under a sunset clause built into the legislation.

The move comes as part of the EU’s broader strategy to distance itself from Russian energy supplies, which once accounted for 45% of its gas imports before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. That figure has since dropped to around 19%, largely due to voluntary cutbacks and alternative sourcing strategies.

To avoid a potential veto from nations like Hungary and Slovakia, which remain heavily reliant on Russian gas, the Commission is reportedly using a special legal mechanism that only requires a reinforced qualified majority instead of unanimous approval.

The proposed ban is expected to be finalized and voted on later this year, forming part of the EU’s long-term energy security and climate policy agenda.
