In a significant development in Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma has announced his immediate retirement from Test cricket. The decision was shared by the 38-year-old through a heartfelt message on Instagram on May 7, 2025. The veteran batter and captain thanked his teammates, coaches, fans, and the BCCI for supporting his red-ball journey over the years.

Rohit Sharma’s Test career spanned over a decade, during which he played 67 matches, scored 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, and registered 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Known for his elegant strokeplay and leadership qualities, Rohit played a pivotal role in several crucial Test victories for India, both at home and overseas.

Rohit also captained India in 24 Test matches, winning 12 of them. He notably led India to the World Test Championship final against Australia, underlining his leadership credentials even in challenging formats.

The retirement comes amid reports that the BCCI selection committee was considering a change in Test leadership due to concerns over Rohit’s recent form and fitness. However, Rohit’s decision to step away appears to be a personal choice aimed at managing his workload and focusing on white-ball cricket.

In his statement, Rohit reaffirmed his commitment to Indian cricket and confirmed that he will continue to play One Day Internationals (ODIs), signaling his intention to stay active in the sport, particularly with an eye on upcoming ICC events.

Rohit’s departure from the Test arena marks the end of a memorable era for Indian cricket, as fans and fellow cricketers alike took to social media to celebrate his achievements and wish him the best for the next phase of his career.
