A demolition drive carried out in Akbar Nagar, located in the Chandrayangutta area of Hyderabad’s Old City, led to high tensions on Wednesday. The operation, led by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) using Hydra machinery, targeted several unauthorized shops and structures.
The demolitions were conducted under tight police security, with a significant deployment of personnel to prevent unrest. Despite the precautions, angry scenes unfolded as local residents resisted the move. Protesters clashed with the police, resulting in pushing and shoving on both sides.
In a dramatic act of defiance, several locals climbed onto the JCB machines and lay down in front of them, attempting to halt the demolition. The protest quickly drew more attention as residents gathered to oppose the civic action, alleging they were not given proper notice or time to vacate.
Adding to the political heat, corporators from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) joined the protest, voicing strong opposition to the drive. They accused the officials, particularly targeting GHMC officer Ranganath and the demolition team, of acting with bias and failing to provide rehabilitation or alternatives to those affected.
Police responded by detaining several demonstrators, including local youth and political workers, to prevent escalation.
As of now, demolition activities in the area have been paused, but the situation remains tense. Residents are demanding immediate intervention from city officials and assurances that no further demolitions will occur without due process.
