Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, Indian intelligence agencies have issued a high-level alert warning that Pakistani spies are targeting Indian journalists and civilians in a bid to extract confidential national security information.
According to reports, Pakistani operatives have been impersonating senior officials from India’s Defence Ministry and contacting journalists via WhatsApp. The operatives have reportedly used Indian numbers, including one identified as +91 7340921702, to appear credible. Their main objective appears to be gathering details related to “Operation Sindoor”, a classified military initiative.
The Ministry of Defence has taken the matter seriously and has urged journalists and media professionals not to disclose any information over phone or text, even if the caller claims to be from official defence institutions. Authorities highlighted that these calls are part of a deliberate espionage strategy aimed at exploiting media access during a sensitive national security operation.
This alert comes in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives, further intensifying the need for vigilance. Intelligence officials have warned all citizens and especially members of the press to avoid sharing any personal or professional information over unknown communications platforms.
To counter the misinformation, the Ministry has advised citizens to follow official government channels and WhatsApp broadcasts for verified updates. It has also asked the public to immediately report any suspicious calls or texts to local law enforcement agencies.
This incident underscores the increasing use of cyber and social engineering tactics in modern espionage, and the growing need for digital awareness among Indian citizens and professionals in key sectors.
