In a major leadership shake-up, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Roston Chase as the new captain of the West Indies Test team. The 33-year-old all-rounder takes over the reins ahead of the upcoming home Test series against Australia, marking his return to the red-ball format after more than two years.
Chase, who has played 49 Tests since his debut in 2016, replaces Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down in March following a disappointing run of form and results. Chase’s elevation to the top role comes as part of CWI’s broader strategy to revitalize the Test side ahead of the next World Test Championship cycle.
The selection process for the new captain was described by CWI as “comprehensive,” involving not just on-field credentials but also psychometric testing to assess leadership aptitude. Alongside Chase, other candidates reportedly included Joshua Da Silva, John Campbell, Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach, and Jomel Warrican — with Warrican appointed as Chase’s vice-captain.
Interestingly, Shai Hope, who currently leads the West Indies in ODIs and T20Is, was considered a strong contender for the role but declined to be considered for the Test captaincy. Hope’s decision underscores the ongoing workload management and format-specific leadership direction the West Indies seem to be adopting.
Head coach Daren Sammy welcomed the appointment, saying, “Roston brings experience, maturity, and a calm presence on the field. He commands respect in the dressing room and understands the nuances of Test cricket. We believe he’s the right man to lead this team forward.”
The upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, beginning June 25 in Antigua, will be Chase’s first assignment as captain. It also marks the start of the new World Test Championship cycle for the Caribbean side.
As the West Indies look to rebuild and reclaim their legacy in the longest format, Chase’s leadership will be under immediate scrutiny. However, for now, the appointment signals a fresh chapter — one rooted in experience, strategy, and hope for a resurgence in West Indies Test cricket.
