In a significant development, BSF jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw was handed over to Indian authorities today after spending 21 days in the custody of Pakistan Rangers. The handover took place at the Attari-Wagah border around 10:30 AM, bringing relief to his family and the forces.
Shaw, a member of the 182nd Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF), had inadvertently crossed the International Border near Punjab’s Ferozepur sector on April 23, 2025, while assisting local farmers near the zero line. He was subsequently detained by Pakistan Rangers, triggering a diplomatic and military-level push for his safe return.
The BSF had been in continuous communication with their Pakistani counterparts through flag meetings and established military channels. His release comes as a positive sign amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly in the wake of the recent Pahalgam terror attack that has intensified bilateral strain.
“The BSF made consistent efforts for his repatriation through appropriate channels. We are relieved to have our soldier back safe,” said a senior BSF official.
Shaw’s return was met with emotional scenes at the border and back home in West Bengal, where his family had been anxiously awaiting news. Officials stated that he would undergo a routine debriefing and medical examination before resuming his duties.
This repatriation is being hailed as a diplomatic success and a much-needed confidence-building step, though larger issues between the two nations remain unresolved.
