As uncertainty looms over the immediate future of the Indian Premier League (IPL) due to recent cross-border tensions, England cricketer Dawid Malan has weighed in on the tournament’s likely direction. Malan indicated that if the IPL doesn’t resume in India or Sri Lanka within the coming week, a restart may be pushed to September.

Speaking to media sources amid speculation and logistical concerns, Malan stated, “If it doesn’t happen in India or Sri Lanka in a week’s time… they will start in September.” His remarks reflect the growing doubts within the international cricket community about the feasibility of continuing the tournament in its original timeline.

The IPL, currently on a temporary suspension following rising security concerns linked to escalating India-Pakistan tensions, has left franchises, players, and organizers scrambling to rework plans. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to confirm a final decision but is actively evaluating both domestic and overseas venues, including Sri Lanka, as contingency options.

Malan’s statement comes as a significant update, especially for overseas players and franchise managements keen on clarity. A September window would mirror past IPL reschedules, such as the 2021 edition, which was moved to the UAE due to COVID-19.

A BCCI official, while not directly confirming Malan’s timeline, stated that “all options remain open” and a formal announcement is expected soon depending on how the security situation evolves.

In the meantime, players are either returning home or training in isolation, awaiting further communication. The possibility of a September restart could also affect player availability due to clashes with international schedules, particularly for England and Australia.

While fans hope for a swift return to action, safety and logistics remain the top priority for organizers. The coming week is likely to be decisive in determining whether IPL 2025 continues soon or sees a more extended delay.
