India Blocks Turkey and Pakistan from Joining BRICS

India

In a decisive move, India has blocked both Turkey and Pakistan’s attempts to join the BRICS alliance, the economic and political bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had shown a strong interest in joining BRICS, even submitting a formal application for membership. However, India opposed Turkey’s entry, citing geopolitical and regional considerations.

Alongside Turkey, Pakistan’s application was also vetoed by India, further solidifying its stance on maintaining BRICS membership as it stands. Both Turkey and Pakistan had hoped to benefit from BRICS membership, which would grant access to strengthened trade partnerships and increased political influence within the alliance.

India’s veto comes amid broader regional tensions and reflects its growing influence within the BRICS framework. This decision emphasizes India’s focus on careful expansion of the bloc, only bringing in new members whose interests align closely with the existing BRICS nations.

The move has sparked mixed reactions globally, as both Turkey and Pakistan had been eager to join BRICS to advance their economic and strategic interests. However, for now, India’s position ensures that BRICS membership remains exclusive to its current members.
