A political storm erupted in Madhya Pradesh after controversial remarks made by state minister Ajay Shah (also referred to in some reports as Vijay Shah) regarding Indian Army Colonel Sophia Qureshi. His comments, perceived as communal and inappropriate, triggered widespread outrage on social media and among political circles.

Speaking at a recent public gathering, the minister allegedly said, “Modi sent a sister from their social class to see the end of those who erased the vermilion of our girls. We sent a child of our Hindu race to take revenge for stripping our Hindus.” The remarks were interpreted as targeting Colonel Sophia Qureshi’s religious background and were widely condemned as divisive and disrespectful to a serving officer of the Indian Army.

Following intense backlash online and criticism from various quarters, the minister issued a public apology. “Sophia is more than my own sister. I am ready to apologize to her at least ten times,” he said. He also added, “I salute Sophia for her services to the country.”

Colonel Sophia Qureshi is a decorated officer known for her professionalism, dedication, and leadership. Many veterans and citizens have expressed solidarity with her, demanding that leaders maintain the dignity of the armed forces and refrain from communal or personal attacks.

As calls for accountability continue, the incident has reignited debates around political rhetoric, religious sensitivity, and the respect owed to those serving in the armed forces, regardless of their background.
