Amid rising concerns over a new COVID-19 variant detected in parts of India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has assured citizens that there is no immediate cause for alarm. ICMR Director Dr. Rajeev Bahl stated that while the variant is being closely monitored, it does not currently pose a serious public health threat.
Dr. Bahl emphasized the importance of following preventive measures rather than panicking. “There is no need to fear the new variant,” he said, “but people should continue to take precautions, especially those who are more vulnerable.”
He specifically advised individuals with weakened immune systems and those suffering from chronic conditions to wear face masks in crowded or indoor public spaces. The reminder comes at a time when many have become lax about COVID-19 protocols, despite health advisories.
ICMR is continuing surveillance of the new strain in collaboration with state health departments and genome sequencing labs. Though hospitalizations remain low, experts are keeping a close watch on the situation to ensure timely response in case of any sharp increase in cases.
Health authorities have reiterated the importance of vaccination and booster doses to help prevent severe illness, and urged the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed.
The Ministry of Health is expected to issue updated guidelines if necessary, based on the progression of the variant and expert recommendations.
