What was meant to be a jubilant celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden IPL title win turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy on Tuesday evening, as a stampede near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium led to multiple deaths and injuries.

Lakhs of enthusiastic fans swarmed the streets of central Bengaluru to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes during the much-anticipated victory parade. However, the massive turnout overwhelmed the city’s security arrangements and led to a catastrophic crush near the stadium gates.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who was present at the scene, expressed deep sorrow and admitted the state was unable to manage the swelling crowd.

“The stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium is unfortunate. We couldn’t control the fans. My apologies to the families of the deceased,” he said in a heartfelt statement.

In a subsequent remark explaining the abrupt ending of the celebratory event, the Deputy CM added:

“Lakhs of people came for the Victory Parade, so we ended the felicitation program in 10 minutes.”

According to eyewitnesses, barricades collapsed under the pressure of the surging crowd, and people fell on top of each other as panic spread. Emergency response teams rushed to the site, but the magnitude of the gathering posed serious logistical challenges.

The Karnataka government has ordered an investigation into the incident, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to visit the victims’ families. Ex-gratia compensation has been announced for the deceased and free medical care promised to the injured.

The incident has sparked criticism on social media, with many questioning the authorities’ preparedness for an event of such scale. Meanwhile, what should have been a day of celebration has ended in mourning for Bengaluru and the RCB community.
