A funeral in the Virat Nagar area of Jaipur turned dramatic on Wednesday after a heated family dispute erupted over the distribution of a deceased woman’s jewellery.

The 80-year-old woman had passed away due to illness, and preparations for her last rites were underway. Her eldest son, who had been caring for her, was given her jewellery — including silver bangles and gold ornaments — by the family elders as part of traditional customs.

However, the younger son objected to this decision, demanding an equal share in the jewellery. As tensions rose, he caused a scene by lying down on the funeral pyre, refusing to let the cremation proceed unless his demands were met. Eyewitnesses said the man even shouted that if he wasn’t given a share, he should be burned along with his mother.

The shocking protest created chaos among family members and mourners. After much emotional pressure, the eldest son handed over the jewellery to his younger brother. Only then was the funeral carried out.

The incident has sparked widespread reaction in the community, raising concerns about how material disputes are overshadowing cultural values and family responsibilities during times of grief.
