The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across Telangana, warning of thunderstorm activity, lightning, and gusty winds expected to persist until May 6. The alert includes several districts of the state, including the capital, Hyderabad, where residents have already experienced heavy rains and isolated hailstorms.
According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h are likely to occur in parts of the state. The department has urged citizens to take precautions, remain indoors during storms, and avoid sheltering under trees or using electrical appliances when lightning is active.
On May 1, several areas in Hyderabad, including Bandlaguda Jagir, TGPA Junction, Hydershakote, Attapur, Narsingi, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, and Nanal Nagar, witnessed sudden weather changes with hailstorms and moderate rainfall. The showers brought relief from the heat but also disrupted traffic and caused minor property damage in some localities.
The IMD’s yellow alert indicates the need for awareness and readiness without causing panic. Citizens are advised to check weather updates regularly and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.
Emergency services and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have been put on alert to respond quickly to any rain-related incidents such as waterlogging or tree falls. Authorities have also advised farmers in rural areas to protect their crops as unpredictable weather may affect agricultural activities.
With more thunderstorms forecasted over the next few days, the state government is urging people to remain cautious and cooperate with civic and weather departments.
