“Unlicensed Cosmetics Raid: Concerns Over Mehandi Products in Hyderabad”

Telangana news express

In a recent crackdown on unlicensed cosmetics manufacturing, officials from the Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, targeted an unauthorized facility named Nagris Herbs in Jiyaguda, Hyderabad, on March 6th and 7th. The focus of the raid was on Pakeezah Mehandi powder and cones, frequently employed in marriage ceremonies, but lacking a necessary cosmetic license.

Manufacturing cosmetics without the required license poses potential risks to public health, prompting the DCA to take swift action. The proprietor of Nagris Herbs, Nagari Abhishek, faced the consequences of operating without proper authorization during the raid.

The seized cosmetics, valued at Rs. 50,000, included products under various brand names such as ‘Pakeezah Gold Mehandi Cone,’ ‘Pakeezah Art Henna,’ ‘Pakeezah Fast Art Henna – Instant Cone,’ and ‘Pakeezah Purified Henna (Mehandi) Powder.’

According to the DCA, cosmetics must be produced in facilities with a valid ‘Cosmetics License,’ ensuring compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices and other standards established by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

During the raid, officials expressed concern over potential health hazards and collected samples for testing. One significant focus was to determine whether the cosmetics contained ‘Picramic Acid,’ a synthetic dye banned for use in henna cones due to associated health risks.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to regulatory standards in the cosmetics industry to safeguard public health. Authorities are expected to take appropriate legal actions against the unlicensed facility, highlighting the need for stringent measures to ensure the safety of consumers. As investigations unfold, this incident underscores the imperative for consumers to be vigilant about the products they use, especially those associated with cultural and celebratory practices.
