Afghanistan Eyes Kunar Dam Project, Sparks Concerns in Pakistan Over Water Flow

Kunar Dam

In a move that could significantly impact Pakistan’s water supply, the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan is reportedly planning to construct a major dam on the Kunar River, a key tributary of the Kabul River that flows into Pakistan.

Taliban General Mubin recently visited the proposed dam site and urged the Kabul government to fast-track the project, citing the need for energy and agricultural development. According to Baloch activist Mir Yab Baloch, the dam aims to retain water within Afghanistan for irrigation and electricity generation.

The proposed Kunar Dam is expected to produce 45 megawatts of electricity and provide irrigation for over 150,000 acres of farmland. While the design and surveys are reportedly completed, the project is currently awaiting funding.

This development comes amid growing regional tensions over water rights. Pakistan, already grappling with reduced water inflow from India following recent moves affecting the Indus Water Treaty, now faces additional pressure from its western neighbor.

Afghanistan and Pakistan do not have a formal water-sharing agreement, making such unilateral moves a matter of concern for Islamabad. Analysts warn that without diplomatic dialogue, water could become the next major flashpoint in South Asia.
